SAN DIEGO -- A forum was held in Pacific Beach Tuesday evening to discuss a possible water rate hike for the city of San Diego. As proposed by the city’s Public Utilities Department, water rates will increase 10.2% beginning on Dec. 1, 2023, and up to 8.7% on Jan. 1, 2025. "The agencies that provide water to the city of San Diego are raising the rates so unfortunately, we will likely have to increase our operating cost, the cost of getting water and the cost of buying chemicals," explained Ramon Galindo, a public information officer with the City of San Diego. Protestors rally outside South Bay city hall over idea of encampment ban City officials say the largest amount of money goes to the purchase of water from the San Diego County Water Authority. Other amounts cover treatments and infrastructure. “Really, there's no profit being made by the public utilities department," said Galindo.Additionally, the city says it's seeking to pass through any rate increases imposed by the San ...

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Palestinian politicians on Wednesday raged against dozens of Palestinian academics who had criticized President Mahmoud Abbas’ recent remarks on the Holocaust that drew widespread accusations of antisemitism. They lambasted the open letter signed earlier this week by over a hundred Palestinian academics, activists and artists based around the world as “the statement of shame.” The well-respected writers and thinkers had released the letter after footage surfaced that showed Abbas asserting European Jews were persecuted by Hitler because of what he described as their “social functions” and predatory lending practices, rather than their religion or ethnicity.“Their statement is consistent with the Zionist narrative and its signatories give credence to the enemies of the Palestinian people,” said the secular nationalist Fatah party that runs the Palestinian Authority. POTTSTOWN, Pa. Instead, it will explore the technology developed by Dual Fluid Energy Inc. to address the need for cleaner sources of energy. If all goes well, officials said, Rwanda and the company could set up a production line of such reactors in the central African nation as the country turns to nuclear power to help meet growing energy needs and adapt to climate change. Much of the country’s electricity comes from hydropower and diesel plants, according to the Rwanda Energy Group, and only about 68% of people have access to electricity.Dual Fluid Energy, founded in Canada in 2021, is one of more than 20 small ...
