Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:15:00 GMT

Since co-founding in 2005, Cameron Slayden has operated Microverse Studios, an animation company with a twist: they only produce animation about extremely complicated cell biology and molecular science.Cameron says, “When I started the company, having a brick and mortar office was really important to me. It was all part of creating a customer experience that inspired confidence that we were professionals and could do this very unique job that we do.”While the company was first finding its legs, they produced scientific animations for documentary series on National Geographic, History, and other TV channels.“It was important that all of the animators be in one place so that they could use the studio’s computing resources. The turnaround times were bananas, too, so being on site made the production process very nimble. There was no efficient cloud computing back then, so we had to FTP over painfully slow internet lines or hand-deliver hard drives. It was very primitive.”As the company...

Agent Orange are a Gas: It’s been a hot minute since Agent Orange’s last studio album, 1996’s Virtually Indestructible, with frontman Mike Palm telling us six years ago that he doesn’t take the release of a new body of work lightly. “There may have been some slight changes along the way, but the genre that I chose and the way I chose to present my sound is somewhat unique,” he said back then. The set will be stacked with classics then.“Especially in the early days of the punk scene, any competitiveness was just for fun, if there was any at all,” Palm also said. “Orange County was still no man’s land as far as punk rock goes. So of course we were in L.A. seeing what was going on, seeing the bands. If anything, you could look at it as encouraging and inspirational — other artists doing something cool.”The Kaotics, Sex Appeal, Trash Day, Social Insecurity, Couch Surf, Akira XX, and Tokyo Riot also performs.Agent Orange are a Gas: The event takes place at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 15 a...

After mysterious death, toy’s sale is halted

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:15:00 GMT

Amazon, Target and Walmart have voluntarily stopped selling water beads marketed for children after government officials, lawmakers and public health professionals called for a ban on the toys.Water beads are tiny balls made of extremely absorbent polymer material. When exposed to liquid, they can expand to 100 times their initial size and weight, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.Because they can grow in the stomach or intestine — becoming golf-ball-size or larger —  these toys pose immense health risks to young children, say experts. They can also cause injury if inserted in an ear or nostril, and can even be inhaled into a lung. And, because they’re mostly made up of water, typical X-rays often do not pick them up. In a safety alert in September, the CPSC reported that these beads “can cause severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, intestinal blockages and life-threatening injuries” and may require surgery to remove. The reported emergencies following...
